Chapter 10

The Guard

“RIGHT ALEX, I NEED YOU to listen to me carefully. The thing that’s approaching right now us is called a guard. I’ve dealt with a few of them before so leave it to me. The only thing you can do is, as soon as he gets close enough, hit it with everything you’ve got. It’s well protected so it probably won’t be enough, but that’ll help to distract it. But whatever you do, make sure you keep your distance!”

“Does it have a weak spot?” asked Alex.

“The head is the weak spot so you have to be in front of it. It’s useless trying to hit it from behind.”

Roger was speaking calmly and showed no signs of anxiety as he gave Alex all these instructions. Although hardly surprised at his level-headedness, Alex couldn’t help but admire the composure in anticipation of the fight that he knew was about to come.

With no more questions to ask, Alex stepped back. He could see this was serious and he was ready to do everything he needed to in order to help his partner.

It wasn’t long before they both spotted the guard. Alex strained his eyesight with the help of Night Filter and noticed that the guard had stopped, no doubt to take a look at the dead creatures Alex and Roger had just left behind them.

He saw it head in that direction but that was where his view ended. What could it be doing there, Alex wondered. Collecting the remains of energy? Trying to figure out what happened? Or maybe just devouring the corpses which were there?

Just then a wind rose above the night forest, rustling the leaves around them, leaving both Roger and Alex with a sense of foreboding that something was about to happen.

“That’s not ideal.” Roger whispered tensely.

“What is…” Alex opened his mouth, but he soon felt a drop fall on his face. The rain they’d been expecting was upon them. The drops fell faster and faster and in just thirty seconds a proper storm had broken out over the forest. It was no tornado, but it certainly wasn’t going to help two people stuck outside the camp about to take on a guard deep in the forest.

The treetops swayed from side to side as the rain hammered down on them and the howling wind drowned out most of the sounds around them. Alex tried his best to make out the monster which he’d last made out lurking around the clearing.

After a couple of minutes of looking, Alex thought he could see something moving.

“It’s moving!” he heard Roger shout.

Sure enough there it was, barely hindered by the storm as it hurtled towards them. As it reached a gap in the trees just below them Alex managed to get a good look at it. Its body was huge, almost twice the size of a bull. The guard was similar to its younger brethren but its skin looked rougher and much stronger.

“Get ready Alex!” Roger shouted as he moved forward.

The monster responded to this by doing exactly the same thing and it could move fast.
